Sing a song of six pièce…

Just so you know, a pièce is a Burgundian wine barrel capable of storing between 215 and 228 liters of wine.

But anyhoo.

I was debating what to write about this go around and, frankly, I’m a little wined out, despite the fact that we had two new bottles in the past 72 hours. Or maybe that is why I’m wined out.

As I mentioned before, I’m engaged and we’re hip deep in wedding planning. We have some eclectic music tastes and, unfortunately, our DJ is more standard, run-of-the-mill when it comes to a playlist. Great for getting the folks up and dancing, not great for making the bride and groom perfectly happy.

So, I’m in the process of taking all of our CDs, turning them into MP3 files, which will give us the double joy of not only being able to create a few discs worth of music to give the DJ, but also to give us a place to fill our MP3 players for our running excursions.

That got me thinking about wine songs.

And, I bet at least one of you just started humming the ubiquitous wine song, “Red, Red Wine” by UB40 (with lyrics and melody by Neil Diamond[1]. No way? WAY!). I’d wager it’s the same person who, when they see the sign ‘Red Wine’ at the store get a momentarily flash of the song too.

Since I’ll be reading this post, I’ll win that bet.

But, what about the *other* wine songs? What do you hear when you walk down the wine aisle? What’s first in your head when someone says, as they are wont to do[2]: “QUICK! NAME A WINE SONG!”

“The Wino and I Know” by Jimmy Buffett?

“Spill the Wine” by War?

“Sangria Wine” by Jerry Jeff Walker?

“Champagne Supernova” by Oasis?

“Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho?

Or do you head straight to Billy Joel’s “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”? Or maybe a dalliance with “That’s Amore” by Dean Martin?

Seriously, I’d like to know.

[1] Two points to whoever just heard ‘Turn on your heart light’ run through a dark corner of their mind.

[2] What, you don’t have “Answer a Music Question or Your Life!” Muggers where you live? Shame. Keeps the brain quite active.

I can think of two off the top of my head…

Nora Jones, “Don’t Know Why” “…my heart is drenched in wine…”

and

The Eagles, “Hotel California” “….I called out to the captain, Please bring me my wine….”
