Top Rosés From a Vin De Pays Tasting


In the UK a trade paper organises a most excellent competition to discover the top 100 Vin De Pays wines. Judged by some of the most familar names in the UK-wine journo field some 1,115 wines were submitted to this years tasting. The winners included a section for rosés; with the following results:

Best Rosé of Show: Les Caves du Commandeur Syrah Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays du Var

La Différence Syrah Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays de L’Ardeche (£4.99)

Cachet Pinot Noir Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays d’Oc, (£5.99)

Domaine de L’Estagnere Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays de la Cité de Carcassonne

Enséduna Grande Réserve Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays des Coteaux d’Ensérune (£5.99)

Laurent Miquel Cinsault/Syrah Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays d’Oc, (£4.99)

Hameau Grenache/Cinsault Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays du Var

Jean Berteau Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays des Sables du Golfe du Lion (£4.99)

Domaine de Mirail Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé, 2006, Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne

Where there is a UK importer the price is shown. The top winning wine, the Les Caves du Commandeur Syrah Rosé, is described as “Pale salmon. Descreet nose. SUbtle raspberry fruit. Soft yet not insubstantial with good spice on the mid-palate and an elegant dry finish.”

There are more than 150 Vin de Pays denominations with 8.6 million cases exported to the UK last year, which is also 33.8% of the UK French wines sales in terms of value.
