Always check the fridge for the remote, and other tips.

Well, heck, who am I kidding, there’s a single wine shop, or, more to the point, the wine section of my local, slightly upscale grocery store, which I do promise to tell you about in the future. There’s a wine ‘outlet’ in town, but I don’t actually get down there often enough, but I should. I actually plan on writing a post about them too, one of these days, in tandem with my own personal Seattle metblogger.

But, what I do tend to frequent, a bit too much, are Farmer’s Markets (and here). Here in Seattle, we’ve got quite a few and, unfortunately, there are a number of vendors who don’t go to all of the markets, so we have to frequent a market each weekend day. Weekend errands are great, but, things like eggs, bacon and heavy cream sell out really fast, so we have to wake up early. Not the most fun thing to do on the weekend after a long week of work. Which isn’t a big deal for me, being currently unemployed, but anyways…

One of our favorite little stands, Sea Breeze Farms, is who we hit for our dairy fix. The heavy cream is so fresh, it won’t even whip right unless you leave it out for a couple hours. But this isn’t MilkMoustache.net and you’re not here to read my inane blathering about dairy products, it is WineSediments.net and you’re here to read my inane blathering about wine, so, with that in mind…

This past weekend, as we shopped, the stand was doing a hard sell of their wine, and since we had a party that evening, we were very amenable to the idea of a bottle of wine we’d never tried. Unfortunately (at the time), it was a Cinco de Mayo party, and we decided to leave this bottle at home and bring a little Spanish wine (Mexican wines proved notoriously hard to locate) which, in retrospect, was a wonderful thing.

As I described to a friend, Sea Breeze Farms is co-located with a winery with the wonderful name of Sweetbreads Cellars much like a remora co-locates with a shark.

One of the reasons we had never tried the wines is that, well, they aren’t exactly cheap. The bottle of Syrah we had was a respectable $25. Not insanely priced, no, but not an everyday bottle of wine.

Before I go any further, let me share the description of the wine from the bottle:

A wild, exuberant wine, packed with exotic character, the 2004 Meed Syrah exhibits notes of toasted sesame, nori and a hint of soy sauce on the nose. A sweet, caramelized flavor rounds out on the palate with cotton candy and chinese five spice on the finish.

Now, I’m not a great wine taster.  I want to be, but, that isn’t me yet.  Cotton candy? Nori?  Couldn’t find either of those, but the soy sauce, the sesame sang right through when we cracked the bottle open to have with dinner.

Patricia and I don’t tend to drink a whole bottle of wine in one meal, at least not on a work night.  And even more so, not on a work day.  Friday and Saturday night?  It is a bit more likely.  Sunday night?  Sometimes.

But a Monday?  Nah.

But this wine, it was… it was exquisite.  Disturbingly so.  We just didn’t want to stop drinking it.

And it made me think, and this is where that very odd post title comes in to play[1], where else in the world are wines that could be this good that I’m missing?  Where am I not looking for wine that might hold a magical discovery? The small rack of wines at the butcher shop?  That occassional bottle of Woot wine (got three bottles in the closet waiting for a tasting)?

And, in the end, I’d like to prompt you, dear reader, to do something different.  To go look for a wine in a store you wouldn’t normally shop at, be it the upscale market, or the ‘Largest Beer and Wine Selection in Town!’ shop.

Oh, and as a post script, despite the picture and despite the whole bottle of wine, no hangovers were had in the making of this blog post.
[1]  While I have never found my remote in the fridge, I do still tend to look there sometimes, because, hey, I was getting a coke while watching TV, I might have put it on the shelf when I was getting the can out.
