Wine Teams Up with Sports

The connection between wine drinkers and sports might not be readily apparent, but according to Reuters, there definitely is one.   Market research company Nielsen conducted a study to find out which sports fans drink the most wine.  Turns out, the unlikely group that holds that distinction are fans of women’s golf.  Who knew?

The same study found that ”wine consumption among U.S. sports fans increased to $81.40 in 2006, which was up $14.60 from 2005 which was in line with increasing consumption of wine in the United States.”  Homes with an LPGA golf fan spent about $125 on wine in 2006 while tennis fans spent about $111.  Next came fans of men’s golf, spending about $109.40 a household.  The biggest rise in wine drinking from last year was among fans of NFL football, who spent $94.30 per household.
