American Wine Blog Awards 2007

American Wine Blog Awards logoTom Wark over at Fermentations has announced his intention of organising an annual award specifically for wine blogs. Details appear to be under debate still but it would appear they will be categories for four different types of blog - wine reviews, wine news, blogs for the wine trade and those blogs run to teach and educate.

A great idea and a superb logo to boot. Sadly it seems to be America-centric so no entry for the likes of Spittoon (my own blog from the UK), Appellation Australia (Australia, obviously) or The Cru (South Africa) amongst many other English language wine blogs.

The awards are to launched next year and from the comments on the announcement post will be sponsored by several wineries.

UPDATE: The categories have been announced (still no international category, despite several requests for one and no response from the organiser on this subject either).

There’s talk of letting English speaking blogs in, but the last time we let you Brits in, it wasn’t exactly a tea party ;)

I say yes for Spitoon!

It would make sense that the American Wine Blog awards focused on American blogs, though.

Maybe each region needs to host its own with the winner from each region competing for the World titles - sort of like the Miss Universe contest… ;-)

I think this is a good way to keep the awards manageable, personally.

I disagree Brenda. If you are going to have something meaningful that covers blogs it should be worldwide. There is just one wine blog from South Africa that I know of for example.

What about me, an american in Spain, writing about non-american wine? Not sure where I fit in…

It would be nice if Tom took sometime out to actually answer the comments on his blog about this, would it not Ryan?

I just wonder if you don’t allow all wine blogs in then someone “hypothetically” could use content from “foreign” blogs write about it and be considered for an award. While in the end all they were doing is wrap ups of others content. Possible not probable….
As for comments they are meant to be answered!

Indeed, comments are meant to be answered. Thank you for the feedback.

I thought in this case, however, an entire post was necessary:

It appears that the American Wine Blog Awards will indeed allow foreign blogs as long as they are written in English. He says that his judges cannot judge a blog they cannot read. So there you have it! As long as its written in English it qualifies.

Perhaps they could have a best foreign blog award within the American Awards?

But the real point is that blogging creates a global community of wine lovers - therefore the award should be a global affair.

Nothing stopping anyone creating the World Wine Awards!

Hell we could even get Stormhoek to supply the wine!!!

The awards are from America, and any English language blog is eligible, so a “foreign” award is unnecessary (unless a panel of translators is available?)

There are several non-US blogs that should be nominated, and will be nominated, I bet.
