Coming Soon to French Schools?


French Kid Drinking Wine While the French government hasn’t gone so far as to set up wine-tasting sessions in classrooms, a recent report released by the governing UMP party suggests that “wine classes” starting as early as primary school could help boost France’s sagging wine industry.

The document ”calls for young people to be taught the history and qualities of various types of French wine,” explains Friday’s BBC News. Of course it also emphasizes the need for children to be informed about the dangers of alcohol.

Pourquoi pas? Other measures to save French wine don’t seem to be working too well…

It just seems like an odd way to attack what could essentially be a marketing problem. When I started drinking wine, the French wines dominated the selection; lately, it’s hard to find more than a few shelves of French wines.

The perception of the French government may have something to do what that here in the US, though, just as the perception of Americans and US government affects American goods.
