Viognier Online

I only found Viognier recently.  I was fixing grilled lobster for my wife’s birthday, and I don’t really drink a lot of white wines, so I asked a local wine shop what to drink with the grilled lobster.  They suggested a decently priced Viognier.

I have to say that this may be the white wine I’ve been looking for!  Drinkable without the overdone oak or butteriness of some of today’s Chardonnays.  I haven’t had a lot of different Viogniers, but I’m looking forward to more in the future!

I did a search on one of my favorite wine sites, Wine Access, for Viogniers to check prices and selection.  What I found was that there is a pretty good range of prices for Viogniers, ranging from a low of $5.99 for a few Viogniers, including a French version, 2003 Chateau de Campuget Viognier de Campuget Cuvee Prestige VDP du Gard, and the 2005 Smoking Loon Viognier from Sonoma, CA, to a high of $99-$100, including the 2004 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Vertige (IWC Rating of 90-92).

One thing I found interesting is that while French Viogniers tend to be fairly high priced, there are Viogniers from California and Australia in the under-$10 range with ratings in the high 80’s.

I have no doubt that there are differences between the old vines in Condrieu and the young vines in Carlifornia and Australia, it’s great to have an approachable, enjoyable white wine within easy reach.
