FIzz-Tizz: Head of Bollinger to sue French supermarkets

BollingerThe head of Bollinger Champagne is getting in a tiz over French supermarkets selling his wine because they are ‘destroying the brand’s upmarket reputation’. He is threatening to sue.

French supermarkets are selling Champagne Bollinger as low as 27, compared with a standard retail price of up to 70 in France.

“It’s a veritable organised traffic, which is flouting all the rules of commerce,” said Mr de Montgolfier, who added that other fine champagnes had suffered the same indignity.

If I understand the article correctly (free registration required) the low price was set as a loss-leader to entice more shoppers into the supermarket, but selling products at a loss is an offence in France so maybe this is what is upsetting him so much.

“The effect on our image is disastrous,” he said, declining to name the supermarkets that stocked his champagne.
