Grown-Up Stuff

One of the pleasures of being a “grown-up” is that we get to have grown-up parties. Although potlucks are fun, so are wine tasting parties. In the recent issue of Blueprint magazine, there is a terrific piece on throwing a wine-tasting dinner. As the tagline promises, “If you can shop and toast bread, you can pull this off.” I’ll drink to that!

Since we entertain quite a bit, I paid particular attention to their tips on how to set up for the party. Love, love, love the idea for placecards - genius!

The Setup

Instead of a place card, each diner gets a red-wine glass stain with his or her name written in it. There are four glasses at each settingone for each wine to be tasted at the table. Threaded with a golf pencil, a wine-tasting scorecard rests on each napkin.

Rebecca Robertson, Blueprint Senior Home Editor makes the following suggestion: “Use brown paper as a tablecloth instead of linen. It feels more ‘humble Italian’ and you can crumple it up at the end of the night with no worries about red-wine stains.”

The article includes food serving ideas, and they took cues from store-bought items, keeping prep time at a minimum with assorted nuts, prosciutto, bruschetta, fruit, cheese and other similar items.

You can read the complete article here, which includes all the recipes, a helpful grocery list, along with wine suggestions and PDF templates for the wine tasting cards. Now all you need is a date and a group of friends… have fun!
