When Shopping for Your Next Home…

By Cate O’Malley

The folks at Food & Wine magazine must be playing the lottery lately, because that’s the only thing that can explain their recent list of “10 Essentials for an Enviable Estate” for those in the Napa Valley area.

1 - Huge Great Room
2 - Built-In Espresso Machine
3 - Wineglass Washers (sure thing, to the tune of $5,800!)
4 - Wood Kitchen Cabinets
5 - Wine Cave (”An alternative to a wine cellar in the basement: wine rooms tunneled into the hillside”)
6 - Bocce Court
7 - Lap or Indoor Pool (In addition to a heated outdoor pool. I kid you not, that’s what the piece says!)
8 - Pool Cabana
9 - Outdoor Fireplace and Heaters
10 - Pizza Oven (The most popular oven is the Mugnaini, starting at a cool $5k)

So next time you’re househunting, be sure to have this handy checklist ready … and the wand of your fairy godmother.

Do you mean my hands aren’t considered wine glass washers? Should I charge myself $5,800 each time they wash wine glasses?

Crazy, isn’t it? I’ve never heard of such a thing, and at that price, this is about the closest contact I need to have with it. Ridiculous.
