Vin De Pays Slakes Thirst for Bargain Wines

UK trade paper Off-Licence News has just published the results of the 3rd (I believe) Top 100 Vins de Pays Wines tasting competition. Top UK taster and journalist Tim Atkin MW headed up a select team of tasters to delve through the delights of France’s Vin De Pays wines, over 1,000 bottles, to arrive at the top 100.

Sadly, no retail stockists details are supplied against each wine, but the retail price is listed demonstrating the great value to be had from what can still be described as a dynamic and interesting sector in the French wine business. All the wines will be for tasting at the May London Wine and Spirits Fair, as last year, I will try and hunt them out and sample them myself then.

In last year’s competition one of ‘my discoveries’ — the 3 Poules Cabernet Franc — won a trophy! But I do not see them listed this year. My find from the previous year, Domaine de Sainte Rose, came away with ……a Top Ten placement for their barrel fermented Roussanne, a new wine to their range, and one of the most expensive submitted at 10 a bottle ($17.50 in U.S. dollars). One I will certainly be checking out at the London fair.

Here are the Top 100 Vin de Pays 2006 trophy medal winners and their prices (note: One British Pound is worth approximately 1.75 U.S. Dollars, so a wine that costs 4 pounds would convert to about 7 dollars).
